He was the son of William Freind, Dean of Canterbury, and Grace Robinson, who was the sister of Sir Thomas Robinson and of Rt Rev Richard Robinson, Primate of Ireland. The Primate appointed him Archdeacon of Armagh and left him his Irish estate, including Rokeby Hall, and he took the surname Robinson. He married Mary-Ann Spencer and had 18 children.
