Mary Bean (1695-1759) was the second wife of Rev Nicolas Carter, and was Elizabeth Carter’s stepmother. She was the mother of Mary Carter, who married Dr Andrew Douglas, and Henry Carter, whom Elizabeth Carter coached in Latin. Her death is referred to in Carter’s letter to Montagu of 13 September 1759.
