James Cecil (1748-1823) was the son of the 6th Earl of Salisbury. He was styled Viscount Cranborne until 1780, when he became the 7th Earl of Salisbury on the death of his father. He was created Marquess of Salisbury in 1789. He served in the governments of Lord North, William Pitt the Younger and Henry Addington. In 1773 he married Lady Mary Amelia (“Emily”) Hill, daughter of the 1st Marquess of Downshire, and they had four children.
