Salomon Gessner (1730-1788) was a Swiss writer and painter. He was a member of the town council of Zurich and ran an important publishing house which produced his books containing his own high-quality etchings. His epic poem Der Tod Abels (The Death of Abel) made him famous throughout Europe and was translated into many languages. The English translation was published in 1779 by Mary Collyer.
