Thomas Leland (1722-1785) was an Irish historian and translator. He was born in Dublin and became Professor of Oratory at Trinity College in 1763. He translated the Orations of Demosthenes (1754-1761), and in 1758 published a life of Philip of Macedon. He was ordained a priest in the Church of Ireland in 1748. In 1764 he published A Dissertation on the Principles of Human Eloquence, which included criticisms of Bishop Warburton’s Discourse on Grace, in which he had made an attack on Methodism.
