Juliane Elizabeth von Schwellenberg

(b. 1728, Hanover, Germany – d. 1797, London, England )

Gender: F

Elizabeth Schwellenberg was Keeper of the Robes to Queen Charlotte. She had come to England from Hanover, and always spoke English with a strong German accent. When Fanny Burney was appointed Second Keeper of the Robes by the Queen (who had met her at the house of Mary Delany), she was made miserable by Schwellenberg, who forced her to get up early and wait for hours in a cold corridor with nothing to eat. Burney eventually persuaded the Queen to let her resign her position on the grounds of ill health.
