John Scott (1725-1775) won large sums at gambling, and was reputed to have made a fortune of £500,000. On 6th November 1770, after a lifetime of womanising, he married Lady Mary Hay, daughter of the Earl of Erroll, when he was forty-five and she was sixteen. He divorced her a year later after she ran off with Captain James Sutherland, and the case was written up with added salacious detail in the London Magazine or Gentleman’s Monthly Intelligencer of October 1771. He remarried in June 1773, and his second wife produced two daughters, and was pregnant with a third when in December 1775the General died of a burst blood vessel while out hunting
