Daughter of Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston, and sister of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. She married John Erskine, Earl of Mar, who was exiled and stripped of his estates after the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. She suffered a mental collapse at the age of forty and was given into the care of her sister, who had prevented her from being abducted by her brother-in-law and taken to Scotland. She spent the last thirty years of her life in the care of her daughter, Frances Erskine.
