Henry St John, first Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751), libertine and charismatic politician who helped revive the Tory party after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 but who gained the reputation of an unprincipled and even traitorous charlatan after he briefly supported the unsuccessful Jacobite rising of 1715, and subsequently orchestrated opposition to Walpole through powerful pamphleteering.
