These Family Trees form an integral part of our digital edition, and are designed to be used alongside the biographical information about the people mentioned in Elizabeth Montagu’s letters that can be found in the Names section.
With the exception of the Vesey and Pulteney trees, they are all related to Elizabeth Montagu’s family. The Leonard Robinson Tree shows her own descent, while the William Robinson Tree shows the descendants of Leonard Robinson’s brother, including Richard Robinson (‘the Primate’) and Grace Friend. Montagu tended to describe all her relatives as ‘cousin’, so these charts help us to understand their exact relationships.
The Thomas Morris Family Tree shows the descent of Elizabeth Montagu’s mother, Elizabeth Drake. The Rogers Family Tree shows the relationships between her husband Edward Montagu and his cousins John, Margaret and Mary Rogers, from whom he inherited or purchased the coal mines and other properties near Newcastle, including Denton Hall, that formed the foundation of the Montagu family’s wealth, and of which Elizabeth Montagu was a diligent manager.
Montagu’s brothers Morris and Charles Robinson married two sisters, Jane and Mary Greenland, and the Greenland Family Tree illustrates their relationships. Mary Greenland had previously married Richard Dawkes, and their two daughters went to India and married there. The Dawkes Family Tree should be read in conjunction with the Greenland Family Tree, since after the death of Mary Dawkes, her husband Thomas Burrowes married her cousin Sarah Greenland.
We hope you find these useful, and plan to add further Family Trees as the edition progresses.
