Bowood House is near Chippenham in Wiltshire. Sir Orlando Bridgman sold the house in 1754 to John Petty-Fitzmaurice (1706-1761), 1st Earl of Shelburne, who retained the architect Henry Keen to extend it and Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown to lay out the park. Montagu was a friend of the 2nd Earl, William Petty-Fitzmaurice (1737-1805); he was to be Prime Minister in 1782-83.
