William Mason

William Mason (1724-1797) was a clergyman who in 1762 became precentor and canon of York Minster. He wrote poetry and historical tragedies, including Caractacus (1759) and an epitaph on Miss Drummond, daughter of the Archbishop of York. He was a great friend of the poet Thomas Gray, and wrote his biography, which was prefixed to the 1775 edition of Gray’s poems. He was an artist of some skill, and a friend of Horace Walpole and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
