William Freind (c.1715-1766) was the son of Rev Robert Friend, headmaster of Westminster School, and Jane De L’Angle. He achieved preferment in the Church of England, and was Dean of Canterbury from 1760-1766. He married Grace Robinson and had three sons and one daughter. His son Robert Friend (1740-1780) was a lawyer and died without issue; his daughter Elizabeth (1743-1808) married Lieutenant Duncan Campbell; his son Rev William Maximilian Friend (1749-804) was Rector of Chinnor in Oxfordshire; and his youngest son John Friend became Archdeacon of Armagh and took the surname Robinson on inheriting Rokeby Hall in Ireland from his maternal uncle, Archbishop Richard Robinson, 1st Baron Rokeby. (The title passed to Matthew Robinson Morris, Elizabeth Montagu’s eldest brother.)
