Joseph was born in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, the youngest of six children. His brother was James Woodhouse (1735-1820), the ‘shoemaker poet’. Elizabeth Montagu appointed him as one of her stewards in the north of England, and arranged for his marriage to Susan White at St George’s Hanover Square on 15th May 1771. They lived in Scotswood near Newcastle and had three children. The eldest son (b. 1773) and their daughter (b. 1778) were named after Edward and Elizabeth Montagu.
