James Hay Beattie
James Hay Beattie (1768-1790), son of James Beattie (1735-1803) and Mary Dun Beattie (1744-1807). Named after James Hay, fifteenth earl of Erroll (1726-1778), an early patron of his father. Like James Beattie senior, James Hay was an academic and poet, who was already assisting his father teaching at Marischal College, Aberdeen, when he died of an unknown illness in 1790. His father edited his works into Essays and Fragments in Prose and Verse (1794) which he published and prefaced with a biography of his son.
