John Palmer (1742-1818) was born in Bath to a family of wealthy brewers, and became the manager of the Theatres Royal in Bath and Bristol. He was instrumental in setting up the mail coach system in 1784, delivering letters much faster and more safely than was possible for postboys on horseback.
