(b. Oct. 9, 1727, England – d. Sept. 1, 1796, Brighton, Sussex, England )
Gender: M
David Murray, seventh Viscount Stormont, 2nd Earl of Mansfield (1727-1796) was nephew to William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield (1705-1793) the famous abolitionist. He was also a politician, serving as ambassador to Vienna and France during the 1770s, and serving as Secretary of State for the Northern Department from 1779 to 1782. He praised James Beattie's poetry in 1771, and Montagu and Beattie considered Murray as a potential patron for him. Though he did ultimately subscribe to Beattie's Essays in 1776, he did not take on the more active supporting roles assumed by Robert Hay Drummond, or Montagu herself.
