He was the M.P. for the county of Berkshire from 1757 to 1774, a Deputy-Lieutenant and then Vice-Lieutenant for the county, and Colonel of the Berkshire Regiment of Militia which he raised in 1758. He was known as a swordsman and duellist and was a favourite of Frederick, Prince of Wales.
