Francis Bacon (1561-1626), 1st Baron Verulam and Viscount St Alban, was a renowned empiricist philosopher, and Lord Chancellor to King James I. The original Gorhambury House near St Albans in Hertfordshire was built by his father, Sir Nicholas Bacon, but fell into disrepair and was pulled down by Lord Grimston; only a small part of the Tudor mansion remains as a ruin.
