James Thomson (1700-1748) was a Scottish poet and playwright who wrote Agamemnon, published and performed in 1738, and Tancred & Sigismunda, a tragedy in five acts that was published in 1745 and performed at Drury Lane by David Garrick. Thomson also wrote the lyrics to “Rule, Britannia!”
