William John Kerr was styled Lord Newbottle until 1767 when he became Earl of Ancram, before succeeding in 1775 as 5th Marquess of Lothian. His wife was Elizabeth Fortescue, daughter of Chichester Fortescue of Dromisken, Co. Louth, and Elizabeth Wesley; they had nine children, eight of whom survived into adulthood. He was a General in the British army.
