Jean-Pierre Blanchard (1753-1809) was a pioneer of balloon flight. He moved from Paris to London in August 1784, and on 16 October took part in a flight from Chelsea to Romsey in Kent, followed by others on 30 November 1784 and 7 January 1785, the latter taking him from Dover Castle across the Channel to France.
