Jean-Baptiste Le Rond d’Alembert (1717-1783) was the illegitimate son of Madame de Tencin, a Parisian salonnière, who abandoned him at birth on the steps of the nearest church. His father paid for his education, and as a young man he was renowned as a mathematician and music theorist. He joined with Denis Diderot to edit the Encyclopédie, which spread the anti-monarchist and anti-clerical ideas of the philosophes.
