Thomas Gage (c1718-1787) was from 1763-1775 commander of the British army in North America. In 1774 he was appointed military governor of Massachusetts, and tasked with implementing the Intolerable Acts, designed to punish the province for the Boston Tea party. In April 1775 he attempted to seize the military stores of the Patriot militias, which sparked the battles of Lexington and Concord. After the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 1775 he was replaced by General William Howe and returned to England the following October.
