George Gipps (1728-1800) was the son of a Canterbury apothecary and hop merchant. He followed his father into the hop trade, but later became a banker in the firm of Gipps Simmons & Gipps. He was MP for Canterbury from 1780-1800, and lived at Harbledown in Kent. His son George Gipps (1783-1869) was MP for Ripon, and married Jane Bowdler, daughter of John Bowdler.
