William Mayne (1722-1794), 1st Baron Newhaven, became MP for Canterbury in 1774, but lost the 1780 election to George Gipps. Instead, he appointed himself and his brother MPs for Gatton, a pocket borough which he controlled. His title of Baron Newhaven, which he acquired in 1776, was in the Irish peerage, and became extinct on his death.
