John Potter (c1713-1770) was the eldest son of John Potter, Archbishop of Canterbury (1673-1747), who disinherited him to show his disapproval of his marriage. He nevertheless achieved significant preferment within the Church of England, becoming Vicar of Lydd and Rector of Chiddingstone and subsequently Rector of Wrotham in Kent. He succeeded William Freind as Dean of Canterbury in 1766.
