Grizel Hamilton was the daughter of Charles Hamilton, Lord Binning. In 1745, she married Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl Stanhope (1714-1786), and they had two sons, Philip Stanhope, Viscount Mahon (1746-1763) and Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl Stanhope (1753–1816).
