François Le Vaillant or Levaillant (1753-1824) was a French author, explorer and noted ornithologist. In 1790 he published Voyage dans l’intérieur de l’Afrique, with a second part in 1795. The work was noted for its use of coloured plates. An English translation was published in 1796. He was imprisoned in 1793 during the French Revolution but released after the death of Robespierre.
