William Warburton

William Warburton (1698-1779) was successively Prebendary of Gloucester, chaplain to King George II, Prebendary of Durham and Dean of Bristol, and was Bishop of Gloucester from 1759 until his death. He was a friend of Alexander Pope, whose Essay on Man he defended against charges of religious unorthodoxy. In 1762 he published The Doctrine of Grace, an attack on Methodism, and in 1747 published an edition of Shakespeare’s plays which was harshly attacked by Samuel Johnson.
