Philip Stanhope was the son of James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope (1673 – 1721), and Lucy Pit (1692–1723). As a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member to the American Philosophical Society, his life’s work lay in the support of natural sciences and mathematics.
