John Botham was rector of Yoxall in Staffordshire and later of Albury in Surrey. He married Lydia Lumley, who was Montagu’s cousin. They had six children of whom only two, Mary and Kitty, survived infancy. He was considered to be spendthrift, and after his death, Montagu took the two girls under her protection and found husbands for them.
