Francis Charlton was descended from the Charlton family of Ludlow in Shropshire. He was a member of the council of the East India Company in Bengal, where he made a considerable fortune, which he left to his daughter on his death. He married Elizabeth Southby and they had one child, Elizabeth Charlton, who married Matthew Montagu on 9th July 1785.
