Richard Barwell (1741-1804) amassed a fortune as a trader with the East India Company. In 1781 he bought the estate of Stanstead Park in Sussex from the trustees of the Earl of Halifax, and enlarged and remodelled it, using James Wyatt as architect, while Capability Brown laid out the grounds.
