James “Athenian” Stuart (1713-1788) was a pioneer of neo-classical design. His book Antiquities of Athens, first published 1762, was the first accurate record of Classical Greek architecture and served as a source book for architects and designers well into the 19th century. The first volume had no fewer than 500 subscribers. Stuart worked with Robert Adam on Montagu House, built by Elizabeth Montagu in Portman Square, London, after the death of her husband. The house took four years to complete, from 1777-1781. (It was demolished by an incendiary bomb in 1944.)
