Paid Opportunity: EMCO Internship 2022-23
Elizabeth Montagu Correspondence Online (EMCO) is seeking interns to participate in the transcription and tagging of the letters of Elizabeth Montagu for their digital edition at https://emco.swansea.ac.uk.
EMCO has displayed on its site facsimile images of around 4,000 manuscript letters from Elizabeth Montagu (1718-1800) to a range of correspondents. These are to be transcribed using Transkribus software. The correspondence is gradually being edited by section editors, who produce detailed critical notes for each letter. When completed each letter is tagged using XML software for display on the site.
Our Intern project is focused on making available transcriptions of Montagu’s letters to Elizabeth Carter. Interns will be responsible for checking and correcting transcriptions against the original images, and then tagging them to be published on the EMCO site. Full training will be provided. These letters will be fully searchable and provide and invaluable source for students and scholars.
Since this is a digital project, applicants may be based anywhere in the world, and will be trained and supervised remotely by project members based in Swansea and Oxford in the UK. Interns will work for a minimum of 12 hours a week over a period of up to twelve weeks, and will be given the opportunity to participate in an innovative digital humanities project. We anticipate two starting dates: October 2022 and January 2023. A stipend equivalent to £10 per hour worked will be provided.
Required qualifications:
- Graduate students (at least one year of studies completed) or recent master’s-level graduates in history or English, archival studies, or library science.
- Attention to detail; commitment to accurate, high-quality work.
- Self-motivated worker, as all work will be done remotely.
Desired qualifications:
- Experience working in digital collections.
- Familiarity with eighteenth-century handwriting and spelling conventions.

Please note that all dates and location information are provisional, initially taken from the library and archive catalogues. As our section editors continue to work through the material we will update our database and the changes will be reflected across the edition.
