Christophe Valmont de Bomare (1731-1807), a distinguished naturalist. Of Catholic Irish and Jacobite stock, he was born in Paris and educated in Navarre, where he became professor of rhetoric; he joined the French army, rose to the rank of Colonel and won the Order of St. Louis for bravery. He went to London in 1763 at the end of the Seven Years’ War as secretary to the Duc de Nivernois, the French Ambassador, and soon after his return he was appointed head of the École Militaire. It was he who advised Montagu against renting the house of the Duc de Chaulnes (Letter to Sarah Scott, 16th July 1776, MO 5991).
