John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham

John Pitt was the eldest son of William Pitt the Elder, 1st Earl of Chatham. He served as a junior officer in the American War of Independence and assumed the title on his father’s death in 1778. He was a political supporter of his brother William Pitt the younger and remained in the cabinet after his death. His military performance in the Peninsular War was considered to be poor, and later in life he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar. On his death the earldom became extinct.
