John Woodward

(b. May 1, 1665, Wirksworth, Derbyshire – d. April 25, 1728, London, England )

Gender: M

John Woodward (1665–1728) was a physician, naturalist, and antiquarian collector. His most famous acquisition was an alleged Roman shield, the provenance of which was much debated. The Scriblerian Club frequently satirised Woodward, and comically suggested that the shield’s original rust had been scrubbed off by an over-zealous maid in The Memoirs of Martinus Scriblerus (Dublin: George Faulkner, 1741).
