Elizabeth Charlton (1766-1817), wife of Matthew Robinson Montagu, Elizabeth Montagu’s nephew. She was born in Madras in 1766. Her parents were Francis Charlton (d. 24 Oct 1782 Lymington, Hampshire) and Elizabeth Southby (b. 16 July 1742 in Madras). Elizabeth Southby’s mother was Frances Berry and her father was Captain William Henry Southby, who was killed by Burmese bandits in a massacre at Negrais on 6th October 1759. Elizabeth Charlton and Matthew Robinson Montagu were married on 7 July 1785. She gave birth to six sons and seven daughters, and died in 1817.
