Montagu Burrows (1775-1848), Elizabeth Montagu’s godson, joined the army at a young age and served his entire career in the 14th Regiment of Foot, rising to the position of Lieutenant-General, but saw little active service, since his battalion was responsible for the defence of Malta during the Peninsular Wars. He was the second son of John and Maria Burrows. He married three times, firstly to Fanny Elizabeth Barrett (d.1805), then Mary Anne Lancom (1794-1832) whom he had 6 sons with, and finally to Eliza Catherine Bradshaw (d.1838).
