George Campbell (1719-1796), Church of Scotland minister, Principal of Marischal College, Aberdeen and Chair of Divinity was one of the original members of the Aberdeen Philosphical Society. He was a Christian apologist contesting the writings of David Hume. He had been attacked for the perceived Latitudinarianism of his The Spirit of the Gospel, a Spirit Neither of Superstition nor of Enthusiasm (1771). In 1777 appeared The Success of the First Publishers of the Gospel a Proof of its Truth (1777).
