John Rivington (1720-1792) was a member of a family of important London printers and booksellers. He succeeded his father Charles Rivington in 1742, and was the favoured publisher for religious and educational works. In 1760, he was appointed publisher to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, and the firm kept up this relationship for over seventy years. He was one of the distributors of the first quarto edition of Elizabeth Carter’s All the Works of Epictetus and the sole publisher of the later duodecimo editions. He also published her Poems on Several Occasions in 1761.
