(b. May 20, 1767, Denton Court, Denton, Kent – d. Aug. 10, 1827, Burghfield, Reading, Berkshire )

Gender: M

Matthew Robinson (1767-1827) was the only son of Revd. William Robinson (1727-1803) and Mary Richardson (1725 – 8th April 1789). He went to Cambridge at the same time as Matthew Montagu and obtained the degree of BA from Christ’s College in 1791. He took holy orders and was granted the living of Coveney in Cambridgeshire that had been in the gift of his grandmother, Elizabeth Drake, and had passed to his uncle, Lord Rokeby. His father eventually resigned the living of Burghfield in Berkshire in his favour in 1800, and Matthew was Rector there for 26 years, erecting memorial tablets to his parents in the church. He married Mary Ann Parsons, sister of a clergyman in Arundel, Sussex, and died childless. She re-married to John Blagrave on 9th September 1828 and died in 1840.

Matthew’s gravestone in the chancel of St Mary’s Church in Burghfield reads: ‘In him the poor/ have lost a friend of unbounded charity/ the Parish a faithful and affectionate pastor/ whose gentle manner and liberal mind/ will long survive in their memory and regret’.
