Sarah Chatterton (née Smith) married Thomas Chatterton in Chipping Sodbury on 25 April 1749. She was the mother of the poet Thomas Chatterton (b.1752), lived in Bristol, where she had once run a girls’ school. Her husband died before her son was born, and following Thomas’s suicide in 1770 at the age of 17, she was left without any means of support. She was taken in and cared for the sisters of Hannah More.
