(b. Nov. 15, 1721, Yorkshire – d. March 11, 1791, Yorkshire )

Gender: M

Nathaniel Cholmley (1721-1791) was the owner of Howsham Hall in Yorkshire; it was originally Jacobean mansion, but around 1775 he had it remodelled by John Carr and the grounds laid out by Capability Brown. (The house survives as a luxury wedding venue.) Cholmley was MP for Aldborough from 1756–1768 and for Boroughbridge from 1768-1774. His third wife, Anne, was the daughter of Leonard Smelt, the sub-governor under Lord Holderness to George, Prince of Wales and Frederick, Duke of York, the sons of George III and Queen Charlotte. Elizabeth Montagu visited Howsham Hall in 1783, and described the visit in a letter to the Duchess of Portland (22 November 1783).
