Lady Mary Amelia (“Emily”) Hill (1750-1835) was the daughter of Wills Hill, who was successively 2nd Viscount Hillsborough, 1st Earl of Hillsborough and 1st Marquess of Downshire. In 1773 she married James Cecil (1748-1823), son of the 6th Earl of Salisbury, styled Viscount Cranborne until 1780, when he became the 7th Earl of Salisbury on the death of his father. They had four children. She was known as a sportswoman and influential political hostess, and died in a fire at Hatfield House in November 1835 at the age of 85.
