François, Duc de La Rochefoucauld, (1613-1680) was a noted French author, whose Réflexions ou sentences et maximes morales, generally known as Maximes, first published in 1665, were a collection of pithy observations on human nature and behaviour, which if not always cynical were generally unsparing of human weakness and imperfection.
