Sir John Lockhart Ross (1721-1790), 6th Baronet , was an officer of the Royal Navy who saw service during the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years’ War and the American War of Independence. He was MP for Lanark Burghs from 1760-1768 and for Lanarkshire from 1768-1774. His land tenure reforms were instrumental in the Highland Clearances. He returned to active service in 1777, and served with Admiral Howe, but resigned his command in August 1782.
