James Stuart, Major-General

(b. 1735, England – d. Feb. 2, 1793, London, England )

Gender: M

James Stuart (d.1793) was a British army officer who served in the British East India Company. On 23rd August 1776, as commander-in-chief of the Madras Army, he arrested Lord Pigot, the Governor of Madras, on the instructions of the Council of the Madras Presidency, and was suspended from his command. He insisted on a public court-martial, which took place in December 1786 and resulted in his acquittal. He was restored to his command in January 1781 and took part in the 2nd Anglo-Mysore War, in which he lost a leg. He was once again suspended from his command, this time by the new governor Lord Macartney, and sent home to England, where in June 1786 he challenged Macartney to a duel and severely wounded him.
